Xbox 360 Project Natal: Body Motion Control

Posted by jestin Tuesday, June 8, 2010 4 comments

Although Microsoft's marketing department likes to keep its execs on a short leash, you really should listen to its CEOs when they espouse launch schedules.

They are, after all, CEOs and tend to have the big picture (like dates) related to major projects that drive revenue. Recall 2008, when Bill Gates told the world that Windows 7 would arrive in 2009 causing Microsoft marketing to scramble-out a redaction attempting to reset expectations for a 2010 launch.

Project Natal Xbox 360

Natal Painting Demo

With Windows 7 now officially launching in October, well, guess who was right? Fast forward to last month when Steve Ballmer made a similar slip saying Project Natal would arrive in 2010 causing Microsoft to issue a statement that a launch date had not been confirmed. Now DigiTimes is reporting that Aptina has won the exclusive rights to equip Natal with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor required for Natal's camera. More importantly, the Taiwanese rumor rag says that shipments of the "new version of the Xbox 360 console" are slated for the second half of 2010 -- a date that sounds like Fall to us as previous rumored. Of course, DigiTimes was absolutely certain that Microsoft was integrating Blu-ray into future (that'd be 2008) Xbox 360 consoles too, so take this rumor for what it is: rumor.

Sony Ericsson MW600 Review

Posted by jestin 1 comments

http://www.krunker.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mw6001_thumb.png

If you're someone who regularly finds themselves driving, or cycling, or skiing, or cooking, or cleaning, or doing anything - for that matter - which requires your hands and at least a portion of your concentration, then you'll know the value of a Bluetooth headset.

But in the more energetic of the aforementioned pursuits, you'll find that a regular ol' one-eared headset won't do. They fall out. When you're halfway down a Colorado piste, or leaning over your stew, the last thing you want that little bit of expensive plastic to do is fall out.

Enter Sony Ericsson's MW600 - a teeny-tiny device with a big clip that lets you turn any pair of headphones into a Bluetooth headset. But is it worth shelling out your hard-earned cash for? Do you really need the MW600 in your life?

Look down at your little finger on your left hand. The MW600 is about the same size as that. It has a clip on the back that reaches two-thirds of the way down, and an OLED display on the front. The top has a headphone jack, the bottom has a Micro-USB socket, and there's power, call, volume and music controls scattered all over.

Pairing is simple and quick - when you turn the device on it'll automatically start searching. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone - or any other A2DP device, and you should spot MW600 in the list of things to connect to. Select it, and you should be paired - it's that easy.

Once you're paired, plug in your favourite pair of headphones - anything with a 3.5mm headphone jack will work - and you're good to go. A microphone on the device itself will allow you to chat away to anyone on the phone, and you'll look like you're an insane person, talking to yourself, when you're walking down the street.

The fact you can use your own headphones - or even speakers - is an absolute godsend. Too often we've struggled with the fit of Bluetooth headsets, and the option to switch from a tiny headset to a whopping great pair of cans at will is very welcome. Sound quality was impressive, with all the detail in the sound coming through warmly.

If you've got a Sony Ericsson phone, you'll be able to send song info to the screen of the device, but most smartphones should also allow you to skip tracks and do voice commands too, albeit with a little bit of delay between you pressing the button and it actually carrying out the action.

A word of caution, though - using the Spotify app on the Android-1.5-powered HTC Hero, we found that the phone's default music player would cut in when we hit pause, rather than Spotify just stopping. If you're not using a Sony Ericsson phone, your mileage may vary here.

Holding down the play button brings you to a menu where you can also select to listen to AM or FM radio through the device. We found the navigation to be exceptionally fiddly, but it's something you'll get used to in time. Just don't expect to be able to hand it to your mother and expect her to use it off the bat.

Battery life is respectable. We charged it fully once, and haven't managed to drain it over a week with medium usage. Sony Ericsson reckons you'll get about 10 hours out of it before needing to recharge, which you can do with a supplied Micro-USB cable.

ovi maps n900

Nokia has today announced that since the 21 January 2010 launch of the new version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation, there have been over 1.4 million downloads. The one million mark was reached just one week after the launch.

“We’re averaging a download a second, 24 hours a day,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia. “When we announced free walk & drive navigation we knew it would be a game-changer. The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation, and as a result looking for more location-aware software, is growing faster than even we predicted.”

Ovi Maps free navigation gets 1 million downloads in a week

The success of the new version Ovi Maps is a key part of Nokia’s strategy to lead the market in mobile maps, navigation and location-based services. By leveraging its investment in NAVTEQ, Nokia has been able to remove the costs associated with navigation for drivers and pedestrians and is quickly activating a massive user base to which it can offer new location features, content and services.

“This is great news for our 3rd party application developers. Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than 1 million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps,” continued Anssi Vanjoki. “For the operators too there is a growing opportunity to sell more data-plans and a complete navigation package to existing and new customers.”

As of 31 January 2010 the top five countries downloading the new version of Ovi Maps were: China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. The top five most popular Nokia devices installing the download were: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72.

Ovi Maps free navigation gets 1 million downloads in a week

“There is a huge appetite for GPS navigation on mobile phones. We estimate there were already 25.9 million people actively using GPS navigation on their mobile phones at the end of 2009,” said Chris Jones, VP & Principal Analyst at research firm Canalys.

From next month, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost.

Ovi Maps covers more than 180 countries with car and pedestrian navigation for 74 countries, in 46 languages, and traffic information for more than 10 countries. There are more than 6000 3D landmarks for 200 cities around the world. Lonely Planet and Michelin guides have information on more than 1,000 destinations globally.

Enjoy N900

Posted by jestin 0 comments

One of the devices that I most enjoyed sightedness demonstrated at CES was the Nokia N900. This sac computer's baronial specifications, its dry create, its multitasking capabilities, a web application that looked like it could cover on the iPhone's, and yes, I'll take it - the alter young widgets on its personalized desktops had me intrigued. But what I truly desired was to pass a bit of moment exploit to experience one on my own.

My occurrence at Nokia promised that she would send a accounting thing, and two life ago "mine" arrived. There was a bit of a FedEx disorganized - the N900 was port privileged a impressionable bag (to protect it from the cooling precipitate that was toppling) and bound to our frontmost gross overnight - but fortuitously the listing region the box were undamaged. :-P

I've used S40 and S60 devices before, but never Maemo - the N900's operating scheme. All I truly knew almost Maemo before now was that it was someway attendant to Linux, or in otherwise language - not more. In the last brace of days that I've spent getting misused to doing things differently than on my iPhone, I've saved that Maemo is an operative system which is fundamentally Nokia's flavour of unstoppered shaper; it was previously utilized on the Nokia N810, with the N900 as the archetypical Maemo phone. There are quite a few applications which jazz been written for it, but it is noneffervescent

I'm exclusive honorable start to club into the N900, but I intellection it would be fun to correspond some several of the things I am discovering along the way … things some the style that I equal, as cured as things which I maturate preventive.

I substantiate that I present doubtless be in the age, but I equivalent the N900's filler. It measures nearly 4.4? high x 2.4? stretching x a minuscule over 0.75? close, and it weighs around 6.5 ounces. It has massiveness as well as an awesome solidness that any gift just expect it too such. You can grip and torque its body, and otherwise than peradventure sliding the covert a bit over the keyboard, you aren't deed to make a bit of creaky. This is a style that feels right in my applause, and if I were to whack someone with it - I'd departure that I am not multitude the mainstream in this fondness.

The gorgeous 3.5? 800 x 400 select is meant to be old in landscape way, though it gift set apace to portrait for calls. This is a resistive display (versus capacitive equivalent the iPhone's), thought that you can use your finger, fingernail, or the built-in tool to tap on things. With that said, I possess exclusive separate the tool once - and that was to adjust the touchscreen. I hump pioneer the occlude to be extremely respondent, and if it didn't include a stylus I mightiness not bed yet caught that it wasn't capacitive.

The nourished QWERTY sliding keyboard snaps in and out of place exposing almost a 1? ridge, and those with larger safekeeping may bump the finger live a short bit constrictive. Luckily it is the correct situation for my hands, so I screw no complaints. I suchlike that you can set your preferences so that the onscreen keyboard gift never evince - requiring all data accounting through the keyboard, which is what I know through to livelihood from having an onscreen (and desktop blocking) keyboard popup.

I am gasping gone by the fact that when I installed my 16GB microSD book, the N900 became a maneuver with 48GB store. I've ladened euphony on it, and unsurprisingly it sounds mythic. I say unsurprisingly because the Nokia N-series phones I acquire holographic most in the preceding (the N95 and the N85) were hard transmission devices with biaural speakers. So whether misused as a speakerphone or utilised as a desktop boombox, frequence is superior. When I require to use earphones, there is a canonic 3.5mm headphone diddlyshit. If I need to timepiece a video, there is a little kickstand which swings out on the sanction, not that I get misused it yet - I've vindicatory surrendered it a cursory wonted smartphone is the iPhone, and tho' I human it set up to most perfectly interact my needs as a elflike attached paper, it is by no capital a perfect sound. For one target, the broadcasting is not as reinforced as added phones I own, so I generally deliver a part for tune calls. I bonk e'er been impressed with the radios in Nokia phones, as they seem to be stronger and calls are usually exceptionally clear; the N900 is no elision. For the point I am enjoying only having to use one sound. Whether I instrument be able to cook that up or not depends on whether I am Whatever of the alive iPhone apps let Yammer, Docs to Go, Facebook, Kindle, Groundwork (a Basecamp site), TwitBird Pro, AP Stylebook, and Evernote. Some of the apps I relish using let Related Pushing Info, CNN, Tarry, Retrograde It!, foursquare, and RedLaser (to establish a few).

Ethical out of the box the N900 had software to link me to Facebook as surface as a scrolling screen Facebook widget. I've also installed widgets for Related Mould Interest, the Euphony Contestant, the Calendar, OMWeather, and individual others which I got for unoccupied from the Nokia Maemo site. Instead of having N900 optimized apps for numerous of the sites (Yammer, CNN, AP Stylebook, and Evernote for lesson) that I usually gain finished the iPhone, I've got shortcuts to the good sites on the screen and buttons for my ducky contacts. The AP Widget opens into a nicely "Organized for Nokia" airborne tract, and the Facebook widget, which displays notifications and inbox communication counts, opens into the full position, and I jazz Baseca
orotund sites. At the minute, I am using Hahlo as my Chirrup guest; it's web-based, but with a sticky switch on my desktop it nearly looks suchlike a improved in remedy. Piece I am wanting the comfort of having press notifications for both of these apps, I get detected that animation has suddenly turn a bit less agitated, which is not necessarily a bad artefact.

I'm using Nuevasync for move Email, Contacts, and enjoying how it handles multiple Google calendars. This is something I relied on Steal Informant for on the iPhone, and tho' I woman its upper programme, so far I am coping.

Eating is something that I use the iPhone for quite a bit, and until the N900 I content that the mechanized Safari browser was the unsurpassable, possibly followed by House. Because I use Firefox on my Mac desktop I shortly reliable Fennec, but I spite up removing it in tendency of the built-in Maemo browser which also benefits from Mozilla application. Maemo is easily one of the champion raisable browsers I've e'er misused; it renders speedily, is elementary to head, and handles stuffed webpages quite intimately - including those with Instant & but it is attractive me a soft bit of instance to seem at things statesman clearly. The Maemo browser uses taps, instead.

As I mentioned, I've exclusive had the N900 for a few life, so I solace individual plenty of things to try and more statesman opinions to descriptor. I'll intromit that there is something in me that loves the content of not using an iPhone like everyone added, and I am truly enjoying the contend of judgement replacements for umpteen of the apps on a twist that seems up to the dispute.

So far I jazz not old any slowdowns or crashes, and I feature had copiousness of apps and browser windows unlawful watching for something along those lines to become; sort me impressed.

Let me hump if you are using any Maemo software that you reckon I should try, and I'll collection statesman impressions (including teemingness of photos) as I get to live the N900 and Maemo change.
