Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony forms a Mobile High Definition Link

Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation today announced the formation of a Mobile High-Definition Interface Working Group that intends to create an industry standard for an audio/video interface to connect mobile phones or portable consumer electronics (CE) devices directly to high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and displays. This new mobile connectivity standard, based on Silicon Image’s Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) technology, will be defined, promoted and marketed by the Working Group as an industry standard open to anyone desiring to be an adopter and enable the development of mobile products that adhere to this new standard across a broad connectivity ecosystem.

The Working Group’s vision for the next generation of mobile connectivity is to provide an easy and cost-effective implementation for manufacturers while offering consumers a simple and reliable mobile connectivity experience. A single-cable with a low pin count interface will be able to support up to 1080p high-definition (HD) digital video and HD audio in addition to delivering power to a portable device.

The Working Group is expected to organize a Consortium of founding members who will develop a mobile connectivity technology standard specification that governs transmission and reception of high-definition content between portable devices and display devices, to support connectivity in accordance with the new specification.

Shazam Teams Up with O2

Shazam, the world’s leading mobile music discovery provider, today announced that it has teamed up with O2 to make discovering and capturing music even easier for O2 customers. The agreement will mean that anyone on O2 will benefit from an enhanced mobile music experience, discovering music with Shazam and then purchasing it through their mobile, on the move.

O2 customers simply need to dial 2580 on their mobile and hold it up to the music for a few seconds. Shazam’s award-winning service will then text the user back with the details about the track, and O2 customers will then have a link embedded in that text that will allow them to immediately purchase that track.

“This is another great example of our strategy of working with the best companies in the world to deliver compelling music services for our customers,” said Matt Ward, Head of Music at O2. “We have joined forces with a leader in this space to allow our customers to have an even greater in-depth music experience on their mobile.”

We’re delighted to work with such a leading company to create added value for our IVR service and we look forward to working even closer with O2 in the future.”

The agreement is part of O2’s ongoing commitment to music and will be supported by an online, viral and outdoor marketing campaign. The campaign will include online advertising on O2 Active, interactive marketing at the O2 Academy venues and rolling on-screen advertising at The O2.

GN Netcom, which markets Jabra-branded Bluethooth devices, has stepped up its cooperation with smartphone vendors including RIM (Research in Motion), HTC (High Tech Computer) and Asustek Computer, in addition to producing stereo headsets supporting iPhones, according to Leon Li, regional managing director, APAC, mobile at GN Netcom.

GN has produced a Bluetooth headset for HTC for global sales on an OEM basis, and also cooperated with Dopod in the China market on bundled sales, Li noted.

In addition, GN and Asustek are cooperating in regional bundled sales with the scope of the cooperation extending from handsets to PC systems, Li added.

The penetration rate of Bluetooth headsets in the global headset market currently averages 9% worldwide, but is up to 20% in the US market, Li said citing data compiled by GN.

However, demand for high-end stereo Bluetooth headsets in the Asia-Pacific region is higher than that in the US and Europe as consumers in Asia are more apt to use handsets as multimedia players, Li asserted.

Review: Nokia Extra Power DC 11The folks at the Nokia Guide reviews the Nokia Extra Power DC-11. Head over to their site to read the review

In typical Nokia fashion, the Extra Power DC-11 is a solid mobile charger. The beautiful design and sturdy build put other mobile chargers to shame. Another plus is that you can charge two devices at the same time, but at 1500 mAh, expect to fully charge one Nokia smartphone, or partially two of them.

UK: Orange to sell iPhone

Orange mobile business said Monday that it has reached an agreement to sell Apple Inc.’s iPhone in the U.K. later this year, bringing to an end a two year exclusive contract held by rival Telefonica SA’s O2 mobile network. Although an exact date for the launch was not released, a Orange spokesman said the iPhone would be available on its network by Christmas.

The network will sell both the original iPhone 3G model and the latest iPhone 3GS version, which was launched in June with faster connectivity and added features.

No details of Orange’s pricing or tariffs were released. O2 currently offers the highest specification iPhone 3GS on a sliding scale from GBP274 for the lowest tariff on an 18-month contract, or free on a 24-month contract with the highest tariff. O2’s exclusive contract with Apple has helped the company to boost sales and extend its lead as the largest U.K. mobile network in the U.K. despite the recession.

The current second-largest operator in the U.K., Vodafone Group PLC, has previously expressed interest in stocking the iPhone.
