"Mobilizy GmbH reveals a preview of it’s augmented reality navigation system, the first fully functional mobile AR navigation system available for the Android platform. Wikitude Drive was developed by the Mobilizy Research & Development group in Salzburg, Austria, to satisfy the curiosity of the developers to see if it was feasible to combine real-time navigation with mobile augmented reality. The result of this quest is Wikitude Drive, a fully-functional, light weight navigational system which overlays point-to-point directions on a camera-view, without the need for maps.

"The first two thing you notice when handling the i8910HD is how solid it feels in your hand. This isn’t too difficult to achieve with a monoblock form factor that has no moving parts to the design, but the feel of the materials used combined with the weight and balance of the device make for a very gratifying feeling when holding it. When I had the opportunity to hold the N97 in one hand and the i8910HD in the other, it really made the N97 feel very cheap, plasticky, and hollow, similar to how the N95 felt when it was first released. It’s piano-black finish and reflective chrome accents around the outside of the camera lens and screen makes it very eye-catching.The downside is that the black plastic is an absolute fingerprint magnet. It’s not quite as bad as handling a black iPhone, but very close. After only a couple minutes of use, I found myself needing to wipe the entire phone down with my jeans and when it became really bad, an alcohol pad." Read more here: |

"Word dropped this morning that Torch Mobile, makers of the Iris Browser, had been purchased by Research in Motion. That's great news for BlackBerry fans, who have been in dire need of a browser for, well, ever. However, this is bad news for Windows Mobile. We just heard back from Torch Mobile spokesman George Staikos, and the response is unequivocal: The company will no longer continue developing for Windows Mobile or Windows-CE. Bad news, indeed, if you're set on using Webkit. The good news is that we still have a number of more-than-decent browsers available, including Skyfire, Opera Mobile and even Internet Explorer, which is slowly getting better. And we're still looking for the mobile version of Firefox in the coming months." via wmexperts.com |

Commodore 64 iPhone App Approved! Removed
Update: After finally hitting the app store, the fully-licensed C64 emulator has been yanked after a user workaround made Apple realize that Manomio didn't completely ditch the old-skool BASIC 2.0 interpreter it objected to.
Tsk Tsk. Manomio has this to say:
Unfortunately, Apple has pulled the C64 Application from their store as it was discovered by some users that it was possible to enable the Basic program through the interface. We have now fixed the issue and our application has been re-submitted for approval by Apple.
We thank you all for your support and fingers crossed we hope to launch again over the next few days.
The $5 app supports licensed game images sold by Manomio, and $5 gets you 5 games. Included are Dragons Den, Le Mans, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck, and Jack Attack. More licensed games are expected to cost about 99c to $2 each.
Hopefully Manomio can sort its shit out soon. Stay tuned. [Touch Arcade]
Altec Lansing Orbit Speaker Drops the Batteries, Grows a USB Tail
Some interestingly sideways gadget evolution from Altec Lansing today: The ulraportable Orbit speaker, which originally called for a child's fistful of batteries, is now powered directly over USB. Which is great, for some people.
In gaining a USB cable, used for both audio input and power, the neatly-kickstanded OrbitUSB loses its batteries, and by extension, its 3.5mm jack. In practical terms, this means that the speakers is eminently more useful for anyone trying to coax a little more sound out of their notebooks—or even more so, netbooks—but that it's totally limited to that one application: You won't be able to use this to impose your iPod's contents unto others.
Verizon Samsung Rogue Has AMOLED Display, Promises to Be Better than Glyde It Replaces
We less than liked Verizon's Samsung Glyde, but perhaps the Glyde 2 or the Rogue will make us forget. The Rogue looks like a normal slider but its AMOLED display should be bright (much like the Impression's).
Samsung went with a 3 inch resistive touchscreen for the Rogue, but it does include some more premium features like a 3 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash. We are happy to see a 3.5mm headphone jack and a MicroSD slot. It has a HTML browser and EVDO Rev A speeds and supports VCAST Music/Video and VZ Navigator.
Right now the Rogue is $100 on Verizon's site (with a 2 year contract and after a $100 rebate). The full retail price is $420. [Verizon via PhoneArena]
Google Maps' Giant Game of Monopoly Begins Tomorrow
No, that's not a snarky business headline. Google and Hasbro are launching a worldwide game of Monopoly using Google Maps as the board. It's called Monopoly City Streets.
Each player starts with $3 million. They can buy any street in the world to erect houses, stadiums and even skyscapers allowing them to collect more and more daily rent (ranging from $50,000 to $100 million per property). The goal? "Play to beat your friends and the world to become the richest property magnate in existence."
Streets will vary in cost, of course, with the White House's Pennsylvania Ave. listed at $2 million, while Downing Street (London's home to the senior British cabinet) goes for just $231,000. (America, fuck yeah.)
If anyone sees a spot to register, please say so in the comments. So far we've only tracked down the game's official site and blog. And if we don't start playing right when this game starts, we'll lose out on another rare opportunity to be financially humbled by the real estate market.
