Nokia has today announced that since the 21 January 2010 launch of the new version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation, there have been over 1.4 million downloads. The one million mark was reached just one week after the launch.

“We’re averaging a download a second, 24 hours a day,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia. “When we announced free walk & drive navigation we knew it would be a game-changer. The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation, and as a result looking for more location-aware software, is growing faster than even we predicted.”

Ovi Maps free navigation gets 1 million downloads in a week

The success of the new version Ovi Maps is a key part of Nokia’s strategy to lead the market in mobile maps, navigation and location-based services. By leveraging its investment in NAVTEQ, Nokia has been able to remove the costs associated with navigation for drivers and pedestrians and is quickly activating a massive user base to which it can offer new location features, content and services.

“This is great news for our 3rd party application developers. Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than 1 million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps,” continued Anssi Vanjoki. “For the operators too there is a growing opportunity to sell more data-plans and a complete navigation package to existing and new customers.”

As of 31 January 2010 the top five countries downloading the new version of Ovi Maps were: China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. The top five most popular Nokia devices installing the download were: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72.

“There is a huge appetite for GPS navigation on mobile phones. We estimate there were already 25.9 million people actively using GPS navigation on their mobile phones at the end of 2009,” said Chris Jones, VP & Principal Analyst at research firm Canalys.

From next month, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost.

Ovi Maps covers more than 180 countries with car and pedestrian navigation for 74 countries, in 46 languages, and traffic information for more than 10 countries. There are more than 6000 3D landmarks for 200 cities around the world. Lonely Planet and Michelin guides have information on more than 1,000 destinations globally.

Sweden : 450 jobs in cuts for sony ericsson

Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson plans to cut around 450 jobs at its site in Lund, Sweden, as part of a plan launched in April to reduce global headcount by around 2,000 by mid-2010.

Around 200 consultants will also leave the company, press spokesman Aldo Liguori told Dow Jones Newswires Wednesday. Staff at the Lund site were informed at an internal meeting Tuesday, Liguori said, and will now be given formal notice.

Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between Sweden’s LM Ericsson Telephone Co. and Japan’s Sony Corp. aims to have around 7,900 employees worldwide by mid-2010, Liguori said.

The site in Lund, which is Sony Ericsson’s main center for product development, currently has around 3,000 employees. Sony Ericsson said in April it would cut around 20% of its workforce after weak customer demand and destocking by distributors and retailers pushed the company to a first-quarter loss.

“We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible,” former Chief Executive Dick Komiyama said at the time.

Sony Ericsson has been hard-hit by the economic downturn, in part because of its reliance on mid-end phones at a time when consumer demand shifted to high-end smartphones or cheaper devices.

Sony Ericsson cuts 450 jobs in Sweden

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, the company’s share of the global handset market fell to 4.9% in the third quarter 2009 from 8.5% a year earlier.

In October, the company posted a EUR164 million net loss for the third-quarter amid falling sales and margins. Sony Ericsson hasn’t made a net profit since the second quarter of 2008.

Still, it hopes that a range of new devices including the recently launched Satio and the Xperia X10 smartphone which is due to start shipping in early 2010, will boost its sales and help it return to profitability.

Nokia says it will use Maemo for ‘mobile computers'

Nokia Corp., the world’s largest handset maker, Wednesday said Symbian would remain the key software platform for its smartphones, as it forecast a 10% rise in overall industry volumes next year following a period of sharp contraction.

In a sign of the growing importance of platforms to the industry, Nokia said Wednesday it had made significant improvements to the next version of the Symbian user interface, as it also gave its first industry projections for next year.

Nokia says it will use Maemo for mobile computers, Symbian for cheaper smartphones, and S40 interface for low end

“In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level,” said Nokia Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, adding it had “reach and flexibility like no other platform.”

He also said that a higher proportion of its smartphones–the one area of the handset market that has continued to grow during the recession–will have touch screens or full QWERTY keyboards compared with previously.

The Espoo, Finland-based company, hosting its capital markets day, also said it would focus on stabilizing the average selling price of its handsets to increase revenue.

Nokia says it will use Maemo for mobile computers, Symbian for cheaper smartphones, and S40 interface for low end

“Going into 2010, the overall mobile devices market is stabilizing and it is growing more in the areas where Nokia has competitive advantages,” Chief Financial Officer Timo Ihamuotila said.

Nokia said it will continue to focus on applications for its phones, targeting net sales from its Services unit of EUR2 billion or more in 2011 from an expected 300 million active users by the end of 2011.

To differentiate its products from rivals, Nokia has increasingly focused on applications such as navigation, its Comes With Music phones, and the Ovi online portal. Ovi means ‘door’ in Finnish.

QT 4.6 makes it easier for developers to create applications for Symbian, Maemo, and other platforms

Nokia today released Qt 4.6, the latest version of the cross-platform application and UI framework. Featuring new platform support, powerful new graphical capabilities and support for multi-touch and gestures, Qt 4.6 makes developing advanced applications and devices easier and more enjoyable.

“Qt 4.6 marks an exciting time for developers, regardless of their target form factor or platform,” said Sebastian Nyström, Vice President, Application Services and Frameworks at Nokia.

“Developers can easily create visually appealing and web-connected applications for desktops or devices, including targeting the hundreds of millions of Symbian and Maemo-based devices,”

“The community will enjoy using Qt’s intuitive programming interface to quickly create powerful, appealing applications.” Nyström added.

More platforms

Qt 4.6 includes support for the Symbian platform for the first time, and also adds Windows 7, Apple Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and the upcoming Maemo 6 to the list of Qt supported platforms. Also available is community support for real-time operating systems QNX and VxWorks. Support for Maemo 5 is also currently in development, with the second technology preview being released today.

Qt support for Symbian and Maemo creates the first opportunity for developers to target both of these platforms from the same codebase. Being able to share code across platforms means that the applications they create will reach the market faster and reach a broader audience of device users.

Also released today is a technology preview of new Qt APIs from the Qt Mobility project. These cross-platform APIs provide developers with functionality such as location for navigation-type devices, as well as messaging, contacts, and bearer management.

QT 4.6 makes it easier for developers to create applications for Symbian, Maemo, and other platforms

More eye candy

Qt 4.6 builds upon the graphical improvements of 4.5 and enhances them with the addition of new Animation Framework – including intuitive state machine functionality – plus new advanced graphics effects like opacity, drop shadows, glow, and filtering.

More fingers

One of the most exciting new features in Qt 4.6 is the ability to create multi-touch applications. New multi-touch and gesture based input methods such as flicking and kinetic scrolling make Qt 4.6 a powerful framework for creating dynamic, tactile ways for users to interact with applications and devices.

More horsepower

Qt 4.6 challenges the conventional development notion that advanced UI capabilities normally come with a significant performance cost. Extensive work has been done to deliver the best possible performance while enabling developers to deliver the “wow” effect that is demanded by users.

Key performance improvements come in the form of a highly optimized, re-written Qt GraphicsView rendering algorithm, a new OpenGL paint engine, WebKit, 2D vector graphic support using OpenVG, and new DirectFB support.

Updated tools

Complimenting the release of Qt 4.6 is an updated release of Qt Creator, a cross-platform IDE for Qt development. Qt Creator 1.3 and Qt 4.6 form the Qt SDK which contains everything developers need to create cross-platform applications.

Sony Ericsson Satio

Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u have suspended sales of Sony Ericsson’s flagship smartphone Satio due to a high number of customer returns. The suspension came into effect late last week and is understood to be related to software problems. The move is a huge blow to Sony Ericsson’s push to regain market share and its attempts to move away from its reputation for poor performing handsets.

Sony Ericsson pushed the Satio via as many distribution channels as possible. The manufacturer launched the 12-megapixel, touch-screen, camera phone in mid-October along with the Aino. The handset was first available on Vodafone and has since been added to Orange and 3’s network.

Carphone Warehouse confirmed the suspension. In a statement, the firm said: ‘From time to time we experience issues with new handsets, and their software, which may result in a customer experience that is below our usually high standards.

‘We want customers to have complete confidence and satisfaction in the handsets they buy from us, which is why we have temporarilly withdrawn the Sony Ericsson Satio from sale. We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to restock the Satio phone as soon as possible and will offer any customer who returns a faulty Satio an exchange of phone.’

Sony Ericsson Satio

A Phones 4u spokesman said: “Due to software issues experienced by a number of our customers, we’ve decided to temporarily withdraw the Sony Ericsson Satio from Phones 4u. However, we’re working very closely with Sony Ericsson to resolve these issues. In the meantime, customers who report a fault with their Satio handset will be offered a non like-for-like exchange.”

Vodafone, Orange and 3 said they have no plans to withdraw the Satio but are monitoring returns. A Vodafone spokeswoman said: ‘We have a Vodafone varient which has been through a lot of stringent testing and we have not experienced high levels of returns but we will continue to review the situation.’

Sony Ericsson UK MD Nathen Vautier introduced tougher handset quality control measures this year after mass recalls on flagship devices, the K850i, W910i and C902 in 2008 prompted operators to seek compensation from Sony Ericsson. At the time software freezing and speaker faults on the C905 camera device were responsible for returns as high as 30%.

Sony Ericsson Satio

In a statement, Sony Ericsson said: ‘Sony Ericsson confirms that it has been made aware that a small number of consumers have experienced software issues with its Satio handset when using certain applications. Carphone Warehouse has temporarily removed the handset from sale to ensure that future customers do not have an adverse experience. Sony Ericsson is giving this matter its utmost priority and is working toward solving it as soon as possible.’

Sony Ericsson is understood to be developing software update to tackle the problem ‘within the next few days’.

nokia e72

The highly-anticipated Nokia E72, a device tailor-made for business and personal messaging is now available in stores. To coincide with the arrival of the Nokia E72, Nokia has also released research* revealing that more people rely on email than on traditional phone calls or text messaging when sending and responding to critical information.

Speaking about the research results, Nokia vice president Ukko Lappalainen said, “The research shows that people are spending an average of five full days per year -- equivalent to a full work week -- responding to emails. Half of us (46 percent) choose email over voice or text to send and receive important information. The Nokia E72 was designed exactly with this kind of person in mind -- it allows the owner to be more responsive and communicate how they want, whenever they want and wherever they are.”

The Nokia E72 builds on the formula from Nokia’s most successful full QWERTY keyboard device, the Nokia E71, and adds important new functionality such as desktop-like email and chat experiences. Morevoer, the latest version of Ovi Maps with A-GPS navigation and compass, an optical navi key and 5 megapixel camera are all packed into the sleek, beautifully-designed handset.

The Nokia E72 also comes with Nokia’s push consumer email service, Nokia Messaging, and now for the first time people can set up instant messaging (IM) directly from the homescreen, accessing communities such as Windows Live(TM) Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi Chat. Just like chatting via the desktop, people can respond to friends and colleagues across multiple communities in real-time.

The Nokia E72 can also accommodate multiple work and personal email accounts and, with separate profiles for work and play, allows people to be flexible when it comes to choosing how, when, where and who to respond to. While work emails rank as the most important messages to receive, they are not necessarily the most urgent messages to respond to. According to Nokia’s research, half of respondents (49 percent) prioritise their partners ahead of their bosses or managers (29 percent), colleagues (23 percent) and even customers (31 percent).

Press: Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition launched

Nokia today announced the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition, an entertainment hub that combines mobile broadcast TV (DVB-H), social networking, music and gaming in one compact 3G device. With mobile broadcast TV consumption on the rise – by 2012 there will be over 300 million people worldwide watching TV on their mobile phones – this handset offers easy access to anyone wanting to enjoy an exceptional live, on-the-move TV experience.

Nokia vice president Mark Selby said, “The introduction of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition responds to the arrival of DVB-H broadcast mobile TV networks in new markets and offers an affordable device for new and existing customers alike. Customers are increasingly watching a variety of programmes on their mobiles, such as drama programs, news and sport, for a longer period of time. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has the sound and image quality to hold audiences captive.”

Watch TV. Anywhere.

Thanks to the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition’s DVB-H technology, programs burst through the QVGA 2.4″ screen in full-colour, crystal clear, sharp images. Plug in 3.5mm headphones for personal viewing or use the loudspeaker option to share the experience with friends and family.

With one-click access to live broadcasts, the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition can pick up the best channels around. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition provides broadcast picture quality while the headset acts as an antenna for outstanding reception, so no blank screens or interference during those all important moments. Long battery life gives up to six hours of DVB-H usage; enough time to watch three football matches – or six episodes of a soap opera – before recharging. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition will retail for 155 Euros before taxes and subsidies.

Franklin Selgert, Chairman, Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum said, “It is essential for DVB-H service providers to have a variety of devices capable of serving the mass market.
