Googles Nexus One Official

After many leaks and hands-on’s the Nexus One has just been officially released by Google a few minutes back. Unvieled by Peter Chou, CEO of HTC and head in the creation of the Nexus One’s hardware the superphone(as its called by google) is what the leaks predicted:

- The specs match previous leaks. It’s a 3.7? AMOLED display with a trackball.

- It comes with features such as a light sensor, GPS, and accelerometer. These are all features pioneered by Apple’s iPhone.

- It’s 130 grams in weight and 11.5 mm in width, about the width of a standard #2 pencil.

- The camera is 5MP with LED flash.

- The audio has received an upgrade. It has two microphones, one of which is used for noise cancellation.

- Customization is a key to the Nexus One. There are five home screens to cusotmize your interface.

- Google showed off some of its dynamic touchscreen features of the software.. For example, one of the wallpapers is a lake with leaves. When you touch it, it will ripple. It’s quite nifty, actually.

- They worked with the team at CoolIris to visualize photons on the Nexus One in a 3D environment. If you tap on an album, you’ll be able to quickly scan and load photos. You can also tip and dip photos based on your hand motions and the accelerometer.

HTC HD2 paired with Logitech Dinovo Edge Keyboard

This video shows that its possible to pair a bluetooth keyboard with the HTC HD2.

Today I thought I have to try something new. When i saw my HD2 lie on my bluetooth Keyboard I just had to give it a try. So I paired the HD2 with a Logitech Dinovo Edge keyboard. It is kinda possible to control the HD2 with the keyboard. Some commands wont work with the keyboard arrows, some do. It is possible to assign keyboard keys to Morphgear and FPSECE but they wont work in game. May somehow it would work since the keys are assigned.

Mobile Broadband (Huawei E182E) from 3 is in the house

Posted by jestin Tuesday, December 8, 2009 0 comments

Huawei E182E

Just got my hands on the Huawei E182E HSPA mobile broadband modem from the operator 3 in Sweden (Price 35$ / month). Havent had the chance to test the modem in different places yet so the “speed test” screenshots (that u can find after the break) are tested at my place.

The operator 3 is the first of the operators in Sweden to offer the latest HSPA Evolved technology with 21Mbps. The HSPA Evolved is available in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö – Lund and in Karlskrona.

HSPA Evolved, which is also known as HSPA + is the next generation of HSPA technology. The first version of HSPA Evolved supports data speeds up to 21 Mbps, which means that a user can expect practical speeds of up to 16 Mbps, about 60% faster than other networks for common mobile broadband. Future versions of HSPA Evolved will offer speeds up to 42Mbps, then 56Mbps and finally 168 Mbit / second.

Update: Added another screenshot from speedtest.net

Proporta USB Turbo Charger 1200 External Battery Pack Review by DJRipster

Proporta is a company that designs and manufactures accessories for your various gadgets, mobiles, laptops, cameras and many more. I was given the unique opportunity of writing a review for one of their products.

www.Proporta.com is an easy to use website. The left column helps you select the category of your choice and browse the various products that are available under each category. I was interested in reviewing an item under the mobile category, so I quickly expanded that mobile section, wondering for awhile why the iPhone and the blackberry had their own categories. One item that quickly caught my eye among the many in their catalog was the USB turbo charger. It came in two variants: the 3400mAH and the 1200mAH versions.

While I would have loved to get my hands on the 3400 version, I will be reviewing the 1200 version instead. I know I will be taking the charger to task as my test subjects include the Nokia N97 which has a chunky 1500mAh battery.

The description on the site was clear and precise. It said that I could charge my mobile several times, which of course I was skeptical of, since most of the modern mobile phone batteries can drain the charger in just one-go. However I am excited to get my hands on this unit. The USB Charger 1200 costs £ 30.89 including shipping and VAT, and the shopping process is simple enough to use.

I was surprised that the package was shipped fairly quickly, in less than 10 days I received the neat package from Proporta. My wife graciously offered to help me make an un-boxing review which follows:

The travel charger is small and sleek, and feels nice in the hand; Proporta also provides a velvet carry case which contains 6 adaptors and an extendable cable. One this I noticed was that the USB cable that plugged the charger onto AC power was very short. While this would probably suit laptop users, a desktop user would not enjoy having the charger hanging off the USB port or the AC socket. Since I didn’t receive an AC plug with my package I tried plugging it onto the main power using the iPhone’s power adaptor. No issue there, but it would be good if this cable is longer or at least retractable.

The battery takes about 2 hours to fully charge via USB, and about the same on AC direct power. With the unit fully charged I am ready to get it tested.

The field test

I had the opportunity to test the charger on the following phones:

  • Nokia N97
  • Nokia 6220 classic
  • Sony Erricson G900
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS

I think the N97 has the biggest battery in the list. The charger was impressive, while it took about an hour to discharge its battery into the phone’s I was able to use the phone for the quick emergency calls. Since the cable that connects to the phone is retractable the charger is not necessarily cumbersome, and can be stored out of the way.

The tests on the iPhone 3G and 3GS were interesting. Since I didn’t know the capacity of the battery of the two phones, I wanted to see how much of the battery was recharged with the charger. The results were impressive. As expected the charger could not fully charge the two iPhones, but came in handy for the emergency charge.

The Nokia 6220 classic’s 900mAH battery was the smallest amoung the phones I tested, but I found that the charger still didn’t charge the battery to its full 100%. This was also the same with the Sony Erricson G900 which I found to be disappointing.

Final Words and thoughts

It’s obvious that the 1200 travel charger is for users of smaller phones, especially if you want to be able to use it more than once like its slogan says. The unit is light and easy to carry around, even with its case. It’s good for emergencies, but would likely require to be charged daily if used.

The proporta charger has been designed with the mobile users in mind. I found it non suitable dangling from my desktop’s USB ports. It would probably require a longer cable to allow it to be plugged onto direct power.

Google to Acquire AdMob for $750 million

Google to Acquire AdMob for $750 million

Google today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AdMob, a mobile display ad technology provider, for $750 million in stock. This acquisition will enhance Google’s existing expertise and technology in mobile advertising, while also giving advertisers and publishers more choice in this growing new area.

“Mobile advertising has enormous potential as a marketing medium and while this industry is still in the early stages of development, AdMob has already made exceptional progress in a very short time,” said Susan Wojcicki, Vice President of Product Management at Google. “AdMob is the quintessential Silicon Valley startup – generating impressive year on year revenue growth – and we’re excited to welcome this talented team to Google.”

“I think people underestimate how important ads have been to funding the development of innovative content on the Internet. Our goal all along at AdMob has been to make it possible for developers and publishers to bring their products and ideas to mobile with the same business model,” said Omar Hamoui, Founder and CEO of AdMob. “We’re proud of the progress we’ve made towards accomplishing this goal, and joining Google will only accelerate this process, ultimately leading to very real benefits for end users around the world. As publishers and developers generate more revenue from their mobile products, they will invest more, and their mobile offerings will become richer, more creative and more robust.”

The deal will help Google in its efforts to develop more effective tools for creating, serving and analyzing emerging mobile ads formats. As this ecosystem continues to grow, the company expects these new marketing media to offer significant benefits:

  • Advertisers will be better able to engage mobile users with AdMob’s ad formats
  • Publishers and developers will be able to monetize their content more effectively, which has benefits for the wider mobile ecosystem
  • Users will see more relevant ads and ultimately get access to more ad-supported content and applications – improving their mobile experience

“Attracting the world’s top engineering talent and people with entrepreneurial vision to Google has always been crucial to our success. AdMob’s proven track record in innovating at speed will help maintain that culture – which is why we are so excited to be working with them,” added Vic Gundotra, Vice President of Engineering at Google.

Both companies have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions.
