Now DigiTimes is reporting that Aptina has won the exclusive rights to equip Natal with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor required for Natal's camera. More importantly, the Taiwanese rumor rag says that shipments of the "new version of the Xbox 360 console" are slated for the second half of 2010 -- a date that sounds like Fall to us as previous rumored. Of course, DigiTimes was absolutely certain that Microsoft was integrating Blu-ray into future (that'd be 2008) Xbox 360 consoles too, so take this rumor for what it is: rumor.

If you're someone who regularly finds themselves driving, or cycling, or skiing, or cooking, or cleaning, or doing anything - for that matter - which requires your hands and at least a portion of your concentration, then you'll know the value of a Bluetooth headset.

But in the more energetic of the aforementioned pursuits, you'll find that a regular ol' one-eared headset won't do. They fall out. When you're halfway down a Colorado piste, or leaning over your stew, the last thing you want that little bit of expensive plastic to do is fall out.

Enter Sony Ericsson's MW600 - a teeny-tiny device with a big clip that lets you turn any pair of headphones into a Bluetooth headset. But is it worth shelling out your hard-earned cash for? Do you really need the MW600 in your life?

Look down at your little finger on your left hand. The MW600 is about the same size as that. It has a clip on the back that reaches two-thirds of the way down, and an OLED display on the front. The top has a headphone jack, the bottom has a Micro-USB socket, and there's power, call, volume and music controls scattered all over.

Pairing is simple and quick - when you turn the device on it'll automatically start searching. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone - or any other A2DP device, and you should spot MW600 in the list of things to connect to. Select it, and you should be paired - it's that easy.

Once you're paired, plug in your favourite pair of headphones - anything with a 3.5mm headphone jack will work - and you're good to go. A microphone on the device itself will allow you to chat away to anyone on the phone, and you'll look like you're an insane person, talking to yourself, when you're walking down the street.

The fact you can use your own headphones - or even speakers - is an absolute godsend. Too often we've struggled with the fit of Bluetooth headsets, and the option to switch from a tiny headset to a whopping great pair of cans at will is very welcome. Sound quality was impressive, with all the detail in the sound coming through warmly.

If you've got a Sony Ericsson phone, you'll be able to send song info to the screen of the device, but most smartphones should also allow you to skip tracks and do voice commands too, albeit with a little bit of delay between you pressing the button and it actually carrying out the action.

A word of caution, though - using the Spotify app on the Android-1.5-powered HTC Hero, we found that the phone's default music player would cut in when we hit pause, rather than Spotify just stopping. If you're not using a Sony Ericsson phone, your mileage may vary here.

Holding down the play button brings you to a menu where you can also select to listen to AM or FM radio through the device. We found the navigation to be exceptionally fiddly, but it's something you'll get used to in time. Just don't expect to be able to hand it to your mother and expect her to use it off the bat.

Battery life is respectable. We charged it fully once, and haven't managed to drain it over a week with medium usage. Sony Ericsson reckons you'll get about 10 hours out of it before needing to recharge, which you can do with a supplied Micro-USB cable.

Nokia has today announced that since the 21 January 2010 launch of the new version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation, there have been over 1.4 million downloads. The one million mark was reached just one week after the launch.

“We’re averaging a download a second, 24 hours a day,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia. “When we announced free walk & drive navigation we knew it would be a game-changer. The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation, and as a result looking for more location-aware software, is growing faster than even we predicted.”

The success of the new version Ovi Maps is a key part of Nokia’s strategy to lead the market in mobile maps, navigation and location-based services. By leveraging its investment in NAVTEQ, Nokia has been able to remove the costs associated with navigation for drivers and pedestrians and is quickly activating a massive user base to which it can offer new location features, content and services.

“This is great news for our 3rd party application developers. Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than 1 million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps,” continued Anssi Vanjoki. “For the operators too there is a growing opportunity to sell more data-plans and a complete navigation package to existing and new customers.”

As of 31 January 2010 the top five countries downloading the new version of Ovi Maps were: China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain. The top five most popular Nokia devices installing the download were: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230 and Nokia E72.

“There is a huge appetite for GPS navigation on mobile phones. We estimate there were already 25.9 million people actively using GPS navigation on their mobile phones at the end of 2009,” said Chris Jones, VP & Principal Analyst at research firm Canalys.

From next month, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps, pre-loaded with local country map data, with high-end walk and drive navigation and access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost.

Ovi Maps covers more than 180 countries with car and pedestrian navigation for 74 countries, in 46 languages, and traffic information for more than 10 countries. There are more than 6000 3D landmarks for 200 cities around the world. Lonely Planet and Michelin guides have information on more than 1,000 destinations globally.

- The camera is 5MP with LED flash.

- The audio has received an upgrade. It has two microphones, one of which is used for noise cancellation.

- Customization is a key to the Nexus One. There are five home screens to cusotmize your interface.

- Google showed off some of its dynamic touchscreen features of the software.. For example, one of the wallpapers is a lake with leaves. When you touch it, it will ripple. It’s quite nifty, actually.

- They worked with the team at CoolIris to visualize photons on the Nexus One in a 3D environment. If you tap on an album, you’ll be able to quickly scan and load photos. You can also tip and dip photos based on your hand motions and the accelerometer.

Today I thought I have to try something new. When i saw my HD2 lie on my bluetooth Keyboard I just had to give it a try. So I paired the HD2 with a Logitech Dinovo Edge keyboard. It is kinda possible to control the HD2 with the keyboard. Some commands wont work with the keyboard arrows, some do. It is possible to assign keyboard keys to Morphgear and FPSECE but they wont work in game. May somehow it would work since the keys are assigned.

Opera has published the November statistics for Opera mini, one of the worlds most popular mobile web browser. The number of Opera Mini users more than doubled — from about 16.4 million in November 2008 to 41.7 million in November 2009. This increase shows that their prediction of accelerated growth of the mobile Web has come true. More stats after the break…

In November 2009, Opera Mini saw increases in all three categories of growth: unique users, pages viewed, and data consumed.
In this month’s report, we looked at countries in Africa. The top 10 countries using Opera Mini in Africa are: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Ghana, Libya, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Tanzania, and Namibia.
Some numbers: From November 2008 to November 2009, page views in the top 10 countries of Africa increased by 374%, unique users increased by 177%, and data transferred increased by 183%.
Since our last spotlight on Africa, Kenya jumped from #4 to #3, Ghana jumped from #11 to #5, and Ivory Coast jumped from #8 to #7.
Growth rates in Africa: Ghana and Kenya lead the top 10 African countries in terms of page-view growth (4,348.6% and 615.4%, respectively). Ghana and Ivory Coast lead the top 10 African countries in growth of unique users (1,558.8% and 330.2%, respectively). Kenya leads the top 10 African countries in page views, with each user browsing 525 pages on average each month.
Facebook has taken the lead in Africa; it is the most popular site visited by Opera Mini users in 6 out of 10 countries and the #2 site in three of the countries where it is not #1. Google is also very popular, and is ahead of Facebook in a few of the top 10 African countries. Yahoo and Wikipedia are also ubiquitous in the top 10 lists of the various African countries.
Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets are extremely popular in Africa, but Samsung is a significant exception, boasting the most popular phone used by Opera Mini users in South Africa, Zambia and Namibia.
This month’s report compares the Opera Mini growth rates in different regions around the world.

iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen N64 emulator

Here’s another look at n64iphone, the Nintendo 64 emulator for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen. The app is a port of mupen64plus along with Ari64’s ARM Dynarec, and Adventus / Orkin’s OpenGLES GPU. Since the graphics processing unit (GPU) code is written with the OpenGL ES 2.0 specification, it limits the devices able to be used to the iPhone 3gs and iPod Touch 3rd Gen as of the current Apple lineup.

Note that performance can be improved from what is currently shown here. I am using NO frameskip. I also am not using all the assembly for vector math within the GPU currently. Sound and controlling the emulator aren’t within this video as I still need to implement sound & controller plugins.

Current testings as far as I can tell show:

New York, US and Espoo, Finland – Morph, a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) – was launched today alongside the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA’s official website.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces. Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, commented: “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia, commented: “We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials.”

Professor Mark Welland, Head of the Department of Engineering’s Nanoscience Group at the University of Cambridge and University Director of Nokia-Cambridge collaboration added: “Developing the Morph concept with Nokia has provided us with a focus that is both artistically inspirational but, more importantly, sets the technology agenda for our joint nanoscience research that will stimulate our future work together.”

The partnership between Nokia and the University of Cambridge was announced in March, 2007 – an agreement to work together on an extensive and long term programme of joint research projects. NRC has established a research facility at the University’s West Cambridge site and collaborates with several departments – initially the Nanoscience Center and Electrical Division of the Engineering Department – on projects that, to begin with, are centered on nanotechnology.

Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between Sweden’s LM Ericsson Telephone Co. and Japan’s Sony Corp. aims to have around 7,900 employees worldwide by mid-2010, Liguori said.

The site in Lund, which is Sony Ericsson’s main center for product development, currently has around 3,000 employees. Sony Ericsson said in April it would cut around 20% of its workforce after weak customer demand and destocking by distributors and retailers pushed the company to a first-quarter loss.

“We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible,” former Chief Executive Dick Komiyama said at the time.

Sony Ericsson has been hard-hit by the economic downturn, in part because of its reliance on mid-end phones at a time when consumer demand shifted to high-end smartphones or cheaper devices.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, the company’s share of the global handset market fell to 4.9% in the third quarter 2009 from 8.5% a year earlier.

In October, the company posted a EUR164 million net loss for the third-quarter amid falling sales and margins. Sony Ericsson hasn’t made a net profit since the second quarter of 2008.

Still, it hopes that a range of new devices including the recently launched Satio and the Xperia X10 smartphone which is due to start shipping in early 2010, will boost its sales and help it return to profitability.

Just got my hands on the Huawei E182E HSPA mobile broadband modem from the operator 3 in Sweden (Price 35$ / month). Havent had the chance to test the modem in different places yet so the “speed test” screenshots (that u can find after the break) are tested at my place.

The operator 3 is the first of the operators in Sweden to offer the latest HSPA Evolved technology with 21Mbps. The HSPA Evolved is available in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö – Lund and in Karlskrona.

HSPA Evolved, which is also known as HSPA + is the next generation of HSPA technology. The first version of HSPA Evolved supports data speeds up to 21 Mbps, which means that a user can expect practical speeds of up to 16 Mbps, about 60% faster than other networks for common mobile broadband. Future versions of HSPA Evolved will offer speeds up to 42Mbps, then 56Mbps and finally 168 Mbit / second.

Nokia Corp., the world’s largest handset maker, Wednesday said Symbian would remain the key software platform for its smartphones, as it forecast a 10% rise in overall industry volumes next year following a period of sharp contraction.

In a sign of the growing importance of platforms to the industry, Nokia said Wednesday it had made significant improvements to the next version of the Symbian user interface, as it also gave its first industry projections for next year.

“In 2010, we will drive user experience improvements, and the progress we make will take the Symbian user interface to a new level,” said Nokia Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, adding it had “reach and flexibility like no other platform.”

He also said that a higher proportion of its smartphones–the one area of the handset market that has continued to grow during the recession–will have touch screens or full QWERTY keyboards compared with previously.

The Espoo, Finland-based company, hosting its capital markets day, also said it would focus on stabilizing the average selling price of its handsets to increase revenue.

“Going into 2010, the overall mobile devices market is stabilizing and it is growing more in the areas where Nokia has competitive advantages,” Chief Financial Officer Timo Ihamuotila said.

Nokia said it will continue to focus on applications for its phones, targeting net sales from its Services unit of EUR2 billion or more in 2011 from an expected 300 million active users by the end of 2011.

To differentiate its products from rivals, Nokia has increasingly focused on applications such as navigation, its Comes With Music phones, and the Ovi online portal. Ovi means ‘door’ in Finnish.
